Gay’s Boycott McCall Idaho Whitetail Resort

Doug ManchesterWe may be a long way from same-sex marriage here in Idaho but there is something we can to help our brethren in California, boycott the McCall, Idaho Whitetail Club & Resort.

Resort owner, Doug Manchester (left) contributed $125,000 to the campaign to ban marriage equality in California.

Money collected, from Manchester and others across the country supported the effort by opponents of marriage equality to get Proposition 8 on the November ballot. If passed, the California State Constitution will be amended to prohibit same-sex marriage, a right granted just last month by the California State Supreme Court.

The first ballot initiative effort failed in 2006. This time Prop 8 will be on the ballot because of an increase in funding from people like Manchester.

Fred Karger of Californians Against Hate has been organizing a boycott against all Manchester owned hotels. Karger says on the group’s website, BoycottManchesterHotels.com, “If you believe in equality, it’s time to fight back.”

Thursday Manchester told the New York Times “This really is a free-speech, First Amendment issue. While I respect everyone’s choice of partner, my Catholic faith and longtime affiliation with the Catholic Church leads me to believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman.”

This is not a freedom of speech issue; it is a propaganda attempt to hide a religious extremist political agenda by an obscenely wealthy far right Christian.

Free Speech?! Go to the ACLU Manchester!

If religious beliefs were the ultimate standard for determining law in this country women would still be the property of their husbands, not be allowed to own property or vote.

Manchester, and others like him, has the right to support whatever issue they choose, just as we do.

PrideDEPOT.com urges all our readers and supporters to exercise that same right and join with Fred Karger and the Californians against Hate in boycotting all Manchester owned hotels and resorts. Let Manchester respectfully know you are boycotting his businesses and why.

Two other Manchester owned resorts, also being boycotted, are the Grand del Mar and Grand Hyatt, both in San Diego.

  1. Thank you for the article. Two other national GLBT organizations that are working very hard to end state and federal level discrimination against GLBT Americans, are National Center for Lesbian Rights (http://www.nclr.org) and Immigration Equality (http://www.immigrationequality.org).

  2. I feel really sorry for you and your organization……….Too bad you feel you have to go to such lengths to hurt someone because he expressed and supported his own opinion that didn’t agree with your lifestyle choice. All religion aside, marriage is defined as a union between a man and woman! If you want your own right to “marry” come up with another term but don’t drag down the sacred union between a man and woman. And quit ridiculing others because they have an opinion that differs from yours! Get a life and do something productive with it! Maybe you could donate your own $100,000 for your cause! Oh wait, maybe that’s what’s really bugging you - you can’t support your own cause that way…. :(

  3. Thanks for the post. There are plenty of other places to spend my money when I’m in McCall and San Diego. My large Mormon family will be sure to spend their money elsewhere too. We happen to think the Church has no business in state laws and we support all the members of our family. Always have. Always will.

Manchester is free to spend his money any way he wants. Thankfully, we also have plenty of money and we’re free to spend it anywhere we want.

I disagree with Valerie on almost every point she makes. This isn’t about lifestyle choice - it is about equal protection under the law. My marriage is in no way “dragged down” because other people have equal rights under the law. No one is advocating that any church be forced to marry anybody - this is simply about better assuring that all people are treated equally by the government.

Thanks for letting me know about this. I’ll be passing it along to friends and family.

  4. I think it is great that Manchester donated all of that money. Marriage is defined as one man and one woman. I am not opposed how ever of civil unions which give partners equall rights under the protection of the law.

  5. First off,

If the term marriage is fundamentally a religious or “sacred” term it has no business being used by government at all . We either all have marriage or we all have civil union. Take your pick.

Why does it take a 2/3 majority to raise the sales tax in my county, but it only takes a simple majority to take away my fundamental civil rights?

The concept of having a constition is that it is supposed protect the minority from the majority. Something is wrong when a proposition like California’s Prop 8 is even put out to vote. It gives the majority the false impression that it has a power over a minority. The concept is fundamentally flawed. I have an idea, let’s stop tall people from marrying short people. They would just look ridiculous, and I personally would be offended by the concept of them having sex. So lets do it. I bet I could convince a lot of people that it’s God’s will. If that doesn’t work I will change the proposal to include left landed people, because everyone knows that left handedness is a sign of the Devil.

And for those of you that are trying to tie my Civil Rights issue to an immigration cause…. Forget it. My family has been in California for 150 years. I am a citizen and I am fighting for MY rights as an American, and a Citizen of the Republic of California.

  6. You have to understand civil rights are not to be taken lightly

  7. Has anyone bothered to inform prospective hotel clients by creating an informative review at tripadvisor.com on each of his properties. You could also try leaving reviews at expedia, orbitz, travelocity which all allow for feedback.

  8. I should add for anyone who happens upon this story that Manchester sold Whitetail, which reopened under new management and its old name of Shore Lodge in October, and so a boycott of that particular establishment is no longer necessary.

  9. Also, the Melaleuca folks from Idaho Falls (Vander Sloots) contributed $100,000 to help pass Prop 8.
There ought to be a boycott on these products as well — if anyone still uses them. I know they were hot some time ago…
