I learned of Wednesday’s tragic shooting at the US Holocaust Museum while at the Idaho Human Rights Education Center’s second annual Summer Institute for Teachers in Boise. The 23 junior high and high school educators from across the state were disheartened by the news during an otherwise inspiring week of scholarly dialogue and lesson development to bring human rights into Idaho classrooms.

The timing was also bitter since Friday, June 12 is the eightieth anniversary of Anne Frank’s birthday and human rights and Holocaust education groups across the country, including ours, are planning remembrance events.

The violence in Washington, DC reminds us that hate groups remain active in our nation and we have a responsibility to confront anti-Semitism, racism and indignity. We must not only bear witness to the Holocaust, but also challenge bigotry and hatred whenever and wherever it occurs.

This is an opportunity for Idahoans to model that the shooter does not reflect our state. Boise is, after all, home to the only monument to Anne Frank in the United States, the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial. Members of the public are invited to hear Holocaust Survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein speak at First Presbyterian Church of Boise on Saturday, June 13 at 10 a.m., 950 W. State St.
